SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What's the difference between specialty coffee and regular supermarket coffee?
Specialty coffee is graded on a 100-point scale by certified Q Graders - only coffee scoring 80 or above qualifies as specialty. This reflects superior growing conditions, careful harvesting, precise processing, and skilled roasting. Supermarket coffee is typically commodity-grade, often blended from multiple lower-scoring crops, roasted darker to mask inconsistencies, and packaged months before it reaches your shelf. The difference in the cup is significant - specialty coffee has distinct, traceable flavour characteristics rather than a generic coffee taste.
2. What's the difference between your blends and single origins?
Our blends - like Blackbird and Corcovado - are crafted for consistency and are especially well suited to espresso machines and milk-based drinks. Single origins showcase one farm or region and tend to have more distinct, adventurous flavour characteristics. They especially popular for filter brewing. If you're new to specialty coffee and using an espresso machine, blends are a great starting point.
3. How long does specialty coffee stay fresh after roasting?
Freshly roasted coffee is at its best between 7 and 21 days after the roast date — this is called the "rest period" where CO2 naturally releases from the bean and flavours stabilise. After that, coffee gradually loses its vibrancy over the following weeks. We recommend buying in quantities you'll use within 4–6 weeks of the roast date, storing in an airtight container away from heat and light, and never in the fridge or freezer. You'll find the roast date printed on every Zest bag.
4. How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?
Every order is roasted to order at our Melbourne roastery before it's dispatched. You're not getting coffee that's been sitting in a warehouse - you're getting beans that were roasted specifically for your order, at peak freshness.
5. How much is shipping and how long does delivery take?
Shipping is free on all orders over $70 across Australia. Orders under $70 incur a standard shipping fee. We dispatch promptly after roasting and delivery typically takes 2–5 business days depending on your location.
6. What pack size should I order?
For most home brewers, 250g is a great starting point - it's enough for around 15–20 espresso-based drinks and means you can keep you coffee fresher. If you drink coffee daily or have multiple coffee drinkers in the household or office, 1kg is better value and hits our free shipping threshold on its own.
7. Can I get my coffee pre-ground?
Yes, you certainly can. Simply select the grind size for the method you're using to brew the coffee on the product page. Options include espresso, stovetop, plunger and pourover.
8. Can I use Zest espresso blends in a stovetop Moka pot or plunger?
Absolutely. Blackbird and Corcovado both work beautifully in a Moka pot - use an espresso or medium grind. For a plunger or French press, choose a coarser grind to avoid over-extraction and a muddy cup. Our blends are crafted to be versatile and forgiving across different brew methods, not just commercial espresso machines. If you want specific brew ratios and tips, check the Brew Guide tab on each product page.
9. What's the difference between espresso and filter roast profiles?
The same coffee bean can be roasted differently depending on how you'll brew it. An espresso roast is developed slightly more to bring out sweetness and body that holds up well under pressure and with milk. A filter roast is lighter, preserving more of the bean's natural acidity and delicate fruit or floral notes — best enjoyed black through a pour over or drip. If you're using an espresso machine, choose espresso. If you're brewing by hand, choose filter.
10. What's the difference between Subscribe & Save and a one-time purchase?
A one-time purchase is exactly that - a single order with no commitment. Subscribe & Save sets up automatic deliveries on your chosen schedule (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly) at a discounted price. You can pause, skip, or cancel your subscription at any time with no fees or lock-in periods.
11. Where can I find the best brew recipe for the coffee I order?
Every Zest coffee includes a Brew Guide tab directly on the product page with recommended recipes, brew ratios, water temperature, and extraction times tailored to that specific coffee. For deeper guidance, our YouTube channel has step-by-step brew videos covering espresso, pour over, plunger, and more. You can also visit our Knowledgebase at learn.zestcoffee.com.au for a full library of brewing resources. And if you want a truly hands-on experience, our Richmond Studio runs sensory and brewing sessions - a great way to dial in your technique with guidance from our team.
That answer does four things at once — points to the product page Brew Guide, promotes the YouTube channel, drives traffic to the Knowledgebase, and plugs the Richmond Studio experience. Every one of those is a deeper engagement point with the Zest brand.
