Thunguri comes from Kirinyaga County in Kenya, where the Thunguri Wet Mill forms part of the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative Society. The cooperative brings together 6,888 active members, many working on very small farms averaging around half an acre and approximately 50 coffee trees. Grown at high elevation in deep red volcanic soils, the coffee benefits from cool temperatures, seasonal rainfall and the careful work of thousands of smallholder producers cultivating varieties including SL28, K7, Ruiru 11 and Batian.
Only ripe red cherries are selectively hand-picked and delivered to the wet mill on the same day. After careful sorting, the coffee is pulped, fermented for 16 to 18 hours, washed and graded using clean water from the Kangocho stream. The parchment is then sun-dried to its ideal moisture level before being hulled, sorted and prepared for export. Water is recirculated during processing before being directed into evaporation and seepage pits, supporting a more responsible approach to production.
