Laklo comes from the steep, mountainous landscape of Aileu in Timor-Leste, where 542 smallholder farmers cultivate coffee at elevations of 1,550 to 1,600 metres. The farms are typically just half a hectare in size, with coffee grown beneath casuarina shade trees across the communities of Fatubessi, Kirlelo and Laklo. Despite Timor-Leste’s challenging dry climate and low-nutrient soils, the region’s high elevations and dedicated farming communities are helping drive a new era of quality coffee production.
During harvest, farmers selectively hand-pick ripe red cherries and deliver them to a central mill in Gleno for careful processing. The cherries are laid out to dry whole and raked frequently to encourage even drying over approximately 18 to 22 days. This centralised approach brings greater consistency to the natural process while preserving the character of the Timor varietal and the distinctive growing conditions of Aileu.
